Membership Policy

Membership is open to boys and girls irrespective of where they live.  The Scout Group wishes to welcome as many young people as is possible, provided that they meet the eligibility criteria.  This policy outlines how the Beaver Scout Colony. Cub Scout Pack and Scout Troop manage their membership arrangements.  References are made to the Scout Association’s Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR).

The limitations on our youth membership present considerable challenges when trying to manage our waiting list which currently comprises 35 names.  We have decided to close the waiting list until the 1st January 2010 to stop the situation from getting worse.

We would love to offer a place to everyone who wishes to join, but this is not possible due to the limited size of our HQ and the number of volunteer Leaders in the Group.  Most of our Leaders are parents who are working hard to provide exciting opportunities for their children and other youngsters.   The only way that we can increase the number of young people in a Section is by recruiting more Leaders.  We therefore have an exception to our waiting list policy in that we will grant immediate admission to the children of adults who volunteer to help each week.  If you would like to find out more about this please contact us.

Group Membership Subscriptions

  Beavers Cubs Scouts
Group Membership Fee – National HQ (£18.50), County (£7), District (£3) = £28.50 per person. The Group also pays for neckerchieves and investiture badges, special commemorative badges etc. £2.50 £2.50 £2.50
HQ Costs - HQ, Cabin and Equipment Insurance (£1,000) Electricity (£400), Rates (£40), Basic Maintenance of HQ and Grounds (£250) Water (£100) Group Activities including Pancake Night (February), Swimming Party (March), Forest Festival (June) Theme Night (July), BBQ (Sept) £2.50 £2.50 £3.00
Section Costs – All Sections finance their running costs such as badges, art and craft materials, refreshments etc. Scout subs reflect the costs of meetings that include air rifles, canoeing, tobogganing, district night hike mini camp and the DIY camps. £3.00 £3.00 £4.50
Group Development - In lieu of fund raising events, in 2007 we asked families to pay an optional £2 per month per family to help finance developments and act as seed corn for grant applications. This has become compulsory in 2009 and will apply to all new entrants and Section transfers. This will raise nearly £1,000 to develop the Group. £2.00 £2.00 £2.00
Monthly total - 1st Group member £10 £10 £12
Monthly amount for second and subsequent children who are members of the Scout Group £7 £7 £9
With effect from the 1st January 2008 the Scout Group will collect all subscriptions by Monthly Standing Order so as to ease the administrative burden. The Scout Group will check its bank statement each month to confirm continued membership. If one or more members of your family wish to terminate their membership of the Group, it is your responsibility to contact your bank to arrange for the amendment / cancellation of the standing order. Refunds will not be made as the Group will continue to incur costs on behalf of your child / children.

A major strength of the Scout Group is that in many instances more than one child joins. This provides a number of both tangible and intangible benefits to the Group. To help reduce the strain on family budgets it has been decided to adopt the practice of many organisations and give a discount for the 2nd and subsequent family members.
