Dragon Boating This badge can be completed using the katakanus on the Ashby canal - Big Pete has the authorisation to run this activity.  Because we use a katakanu instead of a dragon boat there are some modifications to the badge. Dragon Boating
Basic Nautical Skills A Scout who has actively participated in the Troop's water activities on the Ashby canal and Splash Camp should be able to qualify for this.  Big Pete is the assessor. Basic Nautical Skills

Katakanu Races - Paddle Power To Victory  (July 2007)

We entered 2 Scout teams in the inaugural District KataKanu races at Conkers Waterside.  It was a great event including teams from Ashby Hastings, 4th Ashby, Ravenstone, Thringstone and Donisthorpe.  At the end of the event the times for each team were announced and it is debatable which was the bigger surprise - the two Patrols clocking the same time or that they shared first place.  The Scouts received the polished paddle trophy from the District Commissioner who organised the event.

The boys in the Eagles had a somewhat disorganised start. Then the Eagles team work clicked into place and they surged into an unbeatable lead.

The Kestrel and Woodpecker patrols did not have enough for separate teams, so they combined.  Lightweights at the front and solid muscle at the back so as to slightly raise the bows (like a speedboat).  They used their slick style to power to victory in their race.

We also entered a Leaders' team and our GSL had to be taught how to hold the paddle!  Our Leaders were much faster than the other team (joke!!) but with 2 paddlers on the left and 3 on the right they could not steer in a straight line. With their zigzag style they were the only team who managed to cause a collision all day - typical Leaders!  Fortunately the boats are virtually unsinkable which is essential with our lot.  Just as well the Scouts are able to do the job properly!

Our backup team turned out in force, demonstrating their adherence to Scouting's "be prepared" motto by producing their chairs; so that they could more easily assimilate the tremendous strain of watching the Scouts exert themselves.

Canoeing - Ashby Canal at Moira

Here are some of the things we have done while canoeing on the Ashby Canal near Moira Furnace.  Many thanks to all the instructors.
Launching the canoe is simply being pushed into the water We would be given some time to paddle around and get used to the canoe
We raft up (link together, stand up, shout our names then sit down).  Sometimes half of us were all told to do it at once! We were given various challenges including running round the raft! Then we would have a game of canoe polo

Watch the movies of our Scouts and their Canoeing Chariots etc.
