This was out Troop's first year at the
Sky High air activities camp at North Luffenham airfield
near Rutland Water. It was a great weekend, lovely
weather for camping but a cantankerous wind preventing
everyone from soaring up into the clouds. Many
thanks to the Lincolnshire Scout Fellowship Parascending
Club (SkyLincs for short)
www.skylincs.co.uk
for a great weekend. It was good to meet Scouts
from Lancashire to London.
It was 06.30 Sunday morning when we were
told to report to the parascending area for 07.30.
As the wind prevented any flying on the
Saturday it was a case of forget breakfast let's go, go,
go.
Watch one of our Scouts parascending
with an instructor at Sky High:-
Some of us had
a go a parabobbing - we put the harnesses on and were
attached to a parachute on a short line. A couple
of instructors stopped us from taking off or being
pulled over. It was like a big kite lifting us off
the ground.
Make the kite
from a black plastic bag using a template. Add a
strengthener each side and keep in place with tape.
Don't forget the string.
Not quite
Blue Peter, but here is the finished kite.
Our Leader added a mouth to
go with the 2 eyes.
Here is the
kite flying ever so high.
The air badge
activities tent provided us with opportunities to make
kites and paper planes as part of the work towards the
Basic Aviation Skills badge. We still have to do
some research to complete the badge.
Other Activities at Sky High
We were allowed to practice belaying
each other, with an instructor closely supervising.
The grass track go karts
were very popular - several of the boys paid for extra
goes.
The land yachts were cool. After
the instructors taught us what to do we soon became
experts at negotiating the figure of eight course.
