We went to Charnwood our first international Camp

Charnwood 2006 was the international camp organised by Leicestershire Scouts and Guides and took place at Long Whatton, near Kegworth, Leicestershire in August.  It was a really amazing time.  We were part of the Normans sub camp.

Friday - Pitch Camp With Our New Friends From Nottingham

We came in the evening and had a pretty boring time pitching camp before going home for the night.  The only thing that was any good was the excitement of seeing the other groups for the first time and the prospect of all the things we would do in the next week.  This was also the first time we met the 39th & 47th Nottingham Scouts we were going to camp with.  This is them:

Saturday - Settling In, Normans, Opening Ceremony

We met at our leaders house than we drove to Charnwood we were on the Norman sub camp. The other scout sub camps were Romans, Victorians, Vikings and Tudors while the explores were on Stone Age and the Staff on Medieval.

After finishing the camp we had to sew the Charnwood and Normans badges onto our sub camp neckerchieves.  This took a very, very long time.  As good Normans we made a gate to hang our shields on, it was also a good vantage point to shoot arrows at invaders.
In the evening we went to a Doctor Who themed opening ceremony.

Sunday - International Day

We were given a challenge, all the sub-camps had to do the activities scattered round the site if you completed it you got a button, some challenges were harder than others. The sub-camp with the most buttons were the winners, unfortunately the Victorians won (Boo!)

Bucking bronco: the aim was to stay on the bull as went faster and faster till it threw you off Face Painting: most of our scouts based the designs on Captain Jack Sparrow when he's in the Indian camp Climbing wall clamber to the top for a button

Hula: make a fool of yourself in a grass skirt and flowers High Ropes: a series of beams and ropes were your meant to balance and climb your way around
In the evening we had a street fair were each group ran a stall and we had to use ''Charnwood'' money to go on the activities we had 10 notes of Charnwood money each.

Monday - On Site Activities / Tuesday - Visitors Day

We each had 5 activities allocated for activities day which ranged from assisted trampoline to the internet bus, clay pigeon shooting, crafts and dance.
It was visitors day there was a Charley Wood show and our sub camp had a mini-street fair with lots of activates but everything was free!

Wednesday - Water Activities Day at Holme Pierrepoint

This was water sport day we had 3 activities to do each 1 was on-land some of the others were sailing, bell boating, katakanus (this is bell boating with a sail), rafting, canoeing, water skiing and white water rafting

Thursday - Sub Camp Challenge

In the morning it was doing what ever you liked, then in the afternoon we had the sub-camp challenge where we had several activities to do these were:-
Ka-plunk were we had to pull out sticks that wouldn't let the balls drop
Giant hungry hippos we had to bowl balls into a giant hippos mouth
Human skittles were a blind folded person had to throw the ball at the other team if a person move they got a point
sponge a leak were we had to fill a pie with water to get a ping pong ball the problem was there were holes that we would have to plug with our hands
marble run were we would connect pipes to get a ping pong ball to the other side,

Friday - Alton Towers and Closing Ceremony

On Friday we went to Alton Towers an amazing thempark it was amazing we went on Air, Nemesis, Oblivion, Rita, Hex, The flume, Rapids, Duel and Spinball Wizzer.

In the evening we had the closing ceremony with every thing from the Welsh National Anthem to Lesotho Guides to fireworks.  Everyone attended with shields, swords and costumes.

Saturday - Strike Camp And Wave Our Friends Farewell

This was the last day we had a hearty breakfast then started un-pitching camp.  All of a sudden the once busy street at Charnwood became deserted everyone had to go.  We had the slot between 1and 3 to get off camp we did that and left the best camp we'd ever done.
We left with a fond farewell to our fellow campers from Nottingham and plans to meet up again with sleepovers at each others' HQs.
