Scouts carry out a lot of
potentially dangerous activities, such as using axes to
chop wood. We rely on Scouts being trustworthy
and following the safety rules. |
| Standing in a canoe is perfectly safe,
if you can rely on the loyalty of your friends to
look after you to keep the raft of canoes stable. |
 |
 |
Working together
is the key to success. It took this group of
Scouts three hours to build the bridge over the stream.
As a family of Scouts they
had to help each other to do the difficult bits. |
| Working together does not just apply to
hard work such as pitching tents and building bridges.
But also pure fun activities such as charging downhill
on a camp trolley. |
 |
 |
You can cut wood on your own, but
it’s so much easier and safer to saw logs if one or two
others help
and hold the wood steady. |
| Some of our activities are difficult and
if you are scared at times that is normal. If you give
in to your fear, the result can be failure. If you have
the courage to overcome
your fear and keep trying then success is within your
grasp. We trust
instructors to use equipment properly and hold the
rope! They rely on us to follow instructions. |

We planted the first of the trees near
our Scout Headquarters in 1997. They need time to
develop and grow, just like everyone in the Scout
Movement. So we have to be tolerant and patient to help
others grow, respect them even if their progress
may be slower than we wish. Likewise we want others to
treat us with the same consideration. |
| Trust, loyalty, consideration for
others, having the courage to overcome difficult
situations, honesty, unselfishness, being friendly,
helping others and looking after things are qualities
that are summarised in the Scout Promise and Law. We
aren’t too worried about whether you are word perfect in
reciting the Promise and Law – we want you to LIVE
THE SCOUT PROMISE AND LAW in the things you say and
do, both in Scouts and elsewhere. |
