Gate Construction

Construct each piece in its required position to avoid having to move it.

Tripod 1

  •  Lay 3 main poles side by side to form the tripod.  Normally the tops and bottoms would be level, but in this case have the middle pole 50-100cm below the other 2.  Tie the 3 poles at the top with a tripod lashing.

  • Carefully raise tripod and splay legs for balance.  The longer leg will form the end of the gate.  The other 2 legs will make the tripod almost vertical on the middle gate side.

  •  Add 3 side pieces for stability (low enough that Scouts can climb up) with square lashings.  Add 1 small pole higher up to make it easier to climb up.

“A” Frame

  •  Note that the “V” at the top of the “A” frame needs to be the same height as the “V” at the top of the tripod.  It is easier to achieve this by measuring the “A” frame poles against the tripod to gauge the position of the top lashing.

  • Square lash the 2 main poles at the top.

  • Spread “A” frame legs to same width as the tripod lashing.  Square lash a small pole across both legs.

  • Stand “A” frame up facing the tripod and in position so that the foot rail can reach.

  • Place the main pole that acts as half the foot rail into the “V” at the top of the “A” frame and tripod.  Square lash at both ends.

Tripod 2

  • Construct as Tripod 1.

  • Stand the tripod up with near vertical side facing the “A” frame and in position so that the foot rail can reach.

  • Place the main pole that acts as half the foot rail into the “V” at the top of the “A” frame and tripod.  Square lash at both ends.  Note if a super pole is used for the foot rail it will be in position already.

Complete Gateway And Bridge

  • Do a Quality Assurance check of lashings to ensure structure is sound.

  • Square lash handrails as high up the tripods and A frame as is possible.  Note if the construction is correct this should give a gap of 60-100cm between foot rail and hand rail.  The bigger the better (within reason).

Flagpoles (Optional)

  • Sisal lash pulley to top of flag pole.

  • Thread flag rope through pulley and attach to flag.

  • Sheer lash flagpole to top of tripod or “A” frame.  Ensure that there is sufficient overlap between the bottom and top sheer lashings.

  • Repeat for as many flags as is required and room permits.

Barriers (Optional)

  • Use lighter poles for barriers as they are less likely to be damaged when dropping on somebody’s head!

  • Square lash barrier pole onto tripod cross piece.  This lashing should be slightly looser than usual because it has to allow the barrier pole to be moved.

  • Rig up pulley system to raise and lower barrier.

  • Repeat for barrier on second half of gateway if desired.

Operation / Maintenance / Risks

  • Gateway must not be climbed on until a Leader has checked the lashings at the start of the day.

  • Maximum normal usage without direct Leader supervision is one person at the top of each tripod and one person on the foot rail.

  • Where a Leader is directly supervising usage the number of permitted users may vary at the Leader’s discretion, based upon size and care of the participants.

  • Climb up / down and walk across the top only.  Do not leap onto the frame, run across, jump up and down while on gateway etc.
