How The Group Badge Reflects The
1st Appleby Magna
with Measham Scout Group |
| Summary |
The badge reflects Appleby Magna, Measham and
all of the surrounding villages in Leicestershire, Warwickshire,
Derbyshire and Staffordshire from which we draw our membership. |
| Apple Trees |
"Appleby" means the settlement by the apple
orchard. |
|
Large Trees |
Two of the apple trees are big trees as "Magna" is the Latin
name for big. The other two are smaller as "Parva" is the
Latin name for small, reflecting the neighbouring village of
Appleby Parva. |
|
Brown Tea Pot |
"Meashamware" is very distinctive pottery (brown with white
markings) that used to be made in Church Gresley and sold in
Measham to people travelling along the Ashby canal. |
|
Sign Post |
The Scout Group attracts members from about a dozen villages on
the Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire
borders. The white sign post on the tea pot points to the villages so as to
include all of the Group's members. |
|
Black Border |
This is a reminder of the area's coal mining past. The
colliery in Measham closed in the mid 1990s. |
|
Design |
The badge was designed by the Scouts who helped to develop this
website. |
