District Night Incident Hike 2009

Theme?

The night incident hike's theme is working through the history of Scouting:-

2006 - The young Baden-Powell

2007 - Siege of Mafeking

2008 - General Baden-Powell's Experimental Camp At Brownsea Island, Poole Harbour in August 1907.

2009 - Scouting For Boys - BP's book published in 1908 that led to the formation of the Scout Movement.  Don't worry about the title, Scouting is for girls as well!

2010 - Scouting the first 50 years.

2011 - Scouting - towards the centenary

Activity? Patrols will be given a map with the bases marked on them, after a safety briefing they will be free to depart along the course attempting the bases in any order they wish.  Patrols will be on their own during the hike, but operating within a restricted area.  At each base the Patrol will be given a task to attempt.
Where?

Start - Donisthorpe Scout Centre

Finish at the Church at Willesley Scout Camp.

When?

Saturday 26th September 2009.

Who?

Scout Patrols of between 4 and 7 Scouts.

Age?

Scout age range, minimum age is 10th birthday, maximum age is 14 years 6 months.

Note - At their discretion Troops may include a Cub in a Patrol to make a viable Patrol.

Experience

The Patrol is expected to read a map well enough to navigate around the camp site and Willesley Woodside in the dark, find the bases and perform a short task at each.  The hike takes place within a confined area, navigation needs to be good enough to reach the camp site, finding all of the bases is a bonus.

Support

If a Leader believes that a Patrol is so inexperienced that they will be unable to achieve this, they are more than welcome to supply an Explorer Scout or CRB'd adult to ensure that they return to base.

Start?

Scout Patrols should check in at 18.01 for a 18.15 start.

End?

Parents are more than welcome to attend the announcement of the results at 22.44 and with luck will be able to depart at 22.59.

Refreshment

Our highly skilled catering team will provide hot dogs and soup or equivalents at the end of the hike.

Camp

Troops opting to camp overnight should book this themselves.  http://www.willesley.org/campsite/

Research?

Appleby Scouts Website - Scout Members Page

http://www.applebyscouts.co.uk/Members-Scouts-SfB.htm
Equipment?

Personal - Essential

Wear hike / camp style clothes with Group neckerchief.

The Scout motto is Be Prepared so make sure that you are.  Would boots and waterproofs be handy for walking through muddy woods?  What if the precipitative environment is excessively moist?  Is there something to help you see in the dark?  What happens if your stomach is empty?

Patrol - Optional

Do some research into Scouting For Boys and meditate upon how it might translate into bases, then consider whether

(a) there are any skills you should practice?

and

(b) there are any small items that you should carry that might help you?

Patrol - Essential

Mini First Aid Kit.

Note - Scouting For Boys was so popular that at one time it was the world's biggest selling book after the Bible. BP made several significant revisions of the book as Scouting developed, including changing the order of the chapters.  The text of each Camp Fire Yarn is at www.thedump.scoutscan.com/s4b.html  This table quote the Camp Fire Yarn numbers from the 34th edition published in 1963 (22 years after BP died) and the numbers may be different, so use your brain.

As usual Patrols can visit the bases in any order and each base will be scored:-

  • 10 for Scouting spirit – Patrol polite, listen quietly to instructions

  • 10 for Patrol organisation and effort – all Scouts actively taking part

  • 20+ for achievement
